Diabetes Alert Day and Essential Foot Care for Diabetics

Two important events today have conspired by some some kind of synchronicity to make me find time to blog!

Firstly, my new book, "Essential Foot Care for Diabetics" is free on Amazon for today only. It's not expensive anyway, but I wanted as many people as possible to benefit from my expertise - I can't treat the hole world, alrtthough it sometimes feels like I'm trying to!

There's lots of nutritional expertise in the book, too, but it's still a quick and easy read and vital for all diabetes suffers.

The second important event is Diabetes Alert Day in the USA, which is suffering an epidemic of diabetes. Thankfully, people are waking up to the fact that a poor diet, high in all kinds of sugars, is a major factor in type two diabetes.

So, as well as increasing awareness of diabetes and the possible consequences in terms of amputations and other health issues, this is a perfect opportunity to make people more aware of their feet and the role they can play in alerting people to the onset of the disease.

Here's the Amazon.com link to the book which, as I say, is free for today only.

And here's the UK link for the book.

Enjoy the book and please take care of your feet!

How the NHS Foot Care Crisis Affects Diabetics

Did you know that you could be ten times more likely to lose a limb through diabetes in some parts of the country compared to others?

That astonishing fact doesn't just reflect well on the areas where the proper tests and treatments are being performed - it shows how abysmally the NHS treats diabetes patients in general. Specific problems associated with diabetes, like peripheral neuropathy - lack of sensation in the extremities - can be helped by specialists like foot care professionals who can be trained to spot the first signs of trouble.

That's why we're extremely careful at the Foot Care Centre to assess what are known as 'contra-indications' - reasons why a standard treatment might be a bad idea or even dangerous - especially with clients affected by diabetes.

And it's why we'll be publishing a short book very soon on foot care for diabetics, as well as including a detailed section in the main book due to be published in the next month or so.

While the NHS struggles to give you the treatments and care you need and deserve, we'll be doing our utmost to help as much as we can!

Watch this space, or our Twitter and Facebook Pages for news of both books.

Urgent News from the Foot Care Centre!

There are two urgent pieces of news that I realise I should have shared with you here!!

First and most urgent - tomorrow, Friday 18 November, is Foot Awareness Day. We've been making quite a splash with this on the websites, Twitter and Facebook, so if you Google it you'll probably find the links, but here's some more information about Foot Awareness Day on the College website.

If you're a foot care provider yourself you can still cash in on this Foot Awareness Day andthe next one. There are resources available on the membership site to help you do that. Membership is free.

The second piece of news is our open day at the Foot Care Centre on Saturday. We'll be open between 10am and 2pm, and everyone is welcome to pop in for a free foot health assessment.

The Foot Care Centre is at 4B Tower Street, Kings Lynn. That's very close to the Majestic cinema and there's parking nearby.

            Fish for Your Feet?

If you have problems with your feet such as hard skin, psoriasis and eczema, then a great new treatment is at hand.

Garra rufa or ‘doctor fish’ are small fish that are found in the river basins of the Northern and Central Middle East… and they help heal feet.

Read more about this amazing 'doctor fish' treatment at the Foot Care Centre.

It's a Challenge - and Not Just for Feet!

Monday morning saw parents and teenagers converging on King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds promptly at 8.am - even though the summer term ended last Friday.

Why were they there? Well, the parents were saying goodbye, but the teeneagers were about to set off on a life-changing trip and a real challenge, in the mountains and tropical forests of Nepal.

We're very proud to be sponsoring the trip for one of those lucky teenagers, and we look forward to hearing all about it when they get back to England in four weeks' time. He'll be trekking in the Himalayas for much of the time, so healthy feet and good boots and socks were vital pieces of equipment for him!

He also took a blister kit, enough hygienic wipes to keep everything clean and infection-free for a month and walking poles - said to reduce impact on knees and ankles by up to sixty percent. He probably also has enough first aid supplies for the whole team, but you can't be too careful! Camping at altitude means he also has to carry enough layered clothing to keep warm and a very good sleeping bag - which all costs money.

The World Challenge trip was organised through the school but still costs each participant several thousand pounds just to participate - which they had to raise themselves - and The Foot Care Centre and The College of Foot Care Practitioners were very pleased to be able to help.

I'll update you on how it went just as soon as I know myself !!!

                Travel Tips and Feet-Friendly Fish!

Fish may not have feet but some of them still seem to know how to take care of ours! Either that, or they just enjoy a nibble. Garra Rufa fish are the subject of one of the most recent articles on the Clinic website, and these friendly fellows are being gainfully employed in the painless treatment of unsightly skin.

We can't promise it won't tickle, though!

There's also a very helpful article on taking care of your feet when travelling, and another on how to care for your feet so they're always ready for revealing footwear, whatever the time of year.

You'll also find links to my recent radio broadcasts - tips I put together as part of Foot Awareness Week, and lots more - with new articles due to be added every day this week!!

In short, run, hop, skip or walk to the Foot Care Centre Kings Lynn website. And if it's real live foot care you want, just contact us at the Centre itself on 01553 768661.

Remember, we're at 6B Tower Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk PE30 1EJ

And, as some of our students tell us, it can be a bit lonely out there.

                  all parts of the site.

Here are the things you'll see:

                    Latest Prospectus and Course Dates

                    Hello again

It's been a busy few months - in fact, where is this year going?!! - and we've been fully occupied by, among other things, designing the new two-week intensive course AND getting it fully accredited by the NCFE.

There's also a complete new home-study course for your essential Anatomy and Physiology qualification - again fully-accredited. We do a first aid at work course, too.

Plus, we've been almost constantly updating the Foot Care College website and we've revamped the Foot Care Professionals membership site, too - it's now FREE!!

We've even found time to run courses and treat lots of people's feet AND to welcome a new member of staff, Kerry Thomas, to the Foot Care Centre. It's fair to say, Kerry has been a revelation and freed up a lot of time (that we've somehow managed to fill!!).

Having Kerry on hand has also meant Jacqui could get on much quicker with the websites and other marketing for the Centre and College, including a series of articles published in Kings Lynn News that have brought in even more clients!

The laser is proving extremely popular, people are loving the cryo-treatment we now offer and there's something else new and very special in the pipeline, too.

All of which is a very long-winded excuse for not updating this blog for a while!!!

Anyway, how does all this affect you?

Well, you can now download the new prospectus and see the latest course dates at the College Website, AND you can sign up at the membership site and get full access to everything for free, AND you can still contact the clinic to get your feet treated!!

                    Telephone: 01553 768 661 or email: enquiries@thefootcarecentrekingslynn.co.uk

Now I think I might need a lie down!!

New Laser Technology at the Foot Care Centre

                        NEWS RELEASE:

Now Kings Lynn Foot Care Centre Introduces Laser* Technology

The Foot Care Clinic in Kings Lynn is introducing even more hi-tech equipment to speed the treatment of clients’ foot problems. Not content with the recent launch of their cryosurgery treatment for warts, corns and verrucas, they now have laser equipment, too.

The laser can be ‘tuned’ and used for many purposes, but perhaps the biggest advance (if not the most glamorous) is laser treatment for fungal nail infections.

As Elizabeth Dutton, owner of the clinic says, “Nail fungus is a persistent and unsightly problem for a lot of people and the chemical treatments they’ve been using up to now don’t have a great record of success, quite frankly. Sadly, a lot of people are embarrassed to show their toes in public because of it.”

Although not many of us will want to expose our toes outside at this time of year, this is the party season and prettily painted nails can certainly add a touch more glamour to a glittery outfit. Some of us are lucky enough to fly off to warmer climes at this time of year, too.

Elizabeth adds, “The Omega Laser I use is painless and effective. You could spend months trying to get rid of a fungal infection with chemicals before you hit the beaches next summer, or you could take a shortcut and get it treated much more quickly and reliably.”

The Omega Laser can also treat corns, warts and cracked skin and help with the healing of damaged muscles and tendons. It can help pain relief, too.

You can find out more about Laser treatment from www.TheFootCareCentreKingsLynn.co.uk under ‘Clinics’ or call the clinic on 01553 768 661.

Elizabeth Dutton is a foot health care practitioner and trainer. She treats foot, back and joint problems at her clinic in Kings Lynn and home visits.

Kings Lynn Foot Care Clinic Announces 'Freeze Your Verruca Away' Technology

                          News Release:

The Foot Care Clinic in Kings Lynn is introducing an exciting addition to help its verruca sufferers. They have brought in cryosurgery equipment and will be running verruca clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays from January 2011.

Elizabeth Dutton, owner of the clinic says, “For many, verrucas are not only unsightly and embarrassing, but can be painful too, and we like to help people get rid of them as quickly as possible. We already treat verrucas but this cryosurgery equipment will speed up treatment.”

Cryosurgery means the freezing of tissue (in this case, verrucas) using liquid nitrogen. The freezing kills the cells off, and the verruca can typically be expected to be gone after three short treatments. It can also be used to get rid of warts and deep-set corns.

Elizabeth adds, “According to Channel 4’s Embarrassing Illnesses, eight million of us have verrucas! Although some verrucas clear up on their own, it can be a long, and sometimes painful, process to get rid of them by yourself. I’m excited about being able to help people get rid of theirs.”

You can find out more about verruca elimination from www.TheFootCareCentreKingsLynn.co.uk under ‘Clinics’ or call the clinic on 01553 768 661.
